New Features in POP3it 3.0

POP3it has many new features for version 3.0:

- POP3it now supports Japanese and Central and Eastern European
characters! No longer do you have to fool around with
AppleScripts to convert between SJIS and JIS. POP3it
does it all automatically for you.
- New Status Window. POP3it now has the ability to show you
what it's doing as it's doing it. You no longer have to
wonder if it's frozen, or if it's just downloading that
    large attachment.
- Support for the OS X version of FileMaker 5.5. You can now
download a Carbonized version of POP3it to work in OS X.
- New AutoCheckEmail function for automatically checking your
    email every so many minutes.
- Better multi-tasking support for Macintosh! Now you can run
FMP/POP3it on the same machine as your mail server and be
able to send email to it. (We do, however, highly recommend
that you do not do this. You will get much better performance
by running FMP and your mail server on two separate machines.)
- New PathToDB function to return the File Path to the folder
containing your database. This is useful if you want to
place your attachments in the same folder as your database,
either for convenience, or for bound solutions that can
be in some unknown location on the user's computer.
- APOP Support. POP3it can now connect to mail servers that
    require the APOP authentication method.
- The POP3-CurrDate function will now force the email Date into
a form that can easily be converted to a standard FileMaker
    Pro Date or Time Field.
- New Developer's Versions that have many enhancements for
developers, like no splash screens, and better control
over the registration of the plug-in.
- New Port function and Default Port configuration setting. No
longer do you have to edit the Windows Registry or the
Macintosh Preference file just to send email to a
    different TCP/IP Port.
- Many minor bug fixes and a few other minor enhancements.

features!

Installation:

Windows:

To install the plug-in on the Windows platform, first quit
FileMaker Pro if it is open. Next unzip or unstuff the contents
of the POP3it .zip or .sit file into a directory. After you have
unzipped or unstuffed the archive file into a directory, you
should find a file in that directory named "POP3it_WIN.fmx". This
is the plug-in file. Copy this file to the directory named
"System" inside your FileMaker Pro application directory. This
directory is usually on your hard drive in a directory similar to
this:

c:\Program Files\FileMaker\FileMaker Pro\System\

If you had POP3it installed previously, you may find a file in
your System directory named "POP3it.fmx". You will need to delete
this before starting FileMaker Pro so that you do not have two
versions of the plug-in installed.

After installation, you can start up FileMaker Pro, and the
plug-in should automatically be active. You can then open the
"Quick_Start_Example.fp5" database and/or the
"POP3it_Example.fp5" database to begin exploring POP3it.

Macintosh:

To install the plug-in on the Macintosh platform, first quit
FileMaker Pro if it is open. Next unstuff or unzip the contents
of the POP3it .sit or .zip file into a folder. After you have
unstuffed or unzipped the archive file into a folder, you should
find a couple of files in that folder named "POP3it_OS9" and
"POP3it_OSX". (If you downloaded the Windows .zip file, the Mac
plug-ins will be stuffed and named "POP3it_OS9.sit" and
"POP3it_OSX.sit". You will need to unstuff them on your mac
before installing them.) These are the plug-in files, one for
each Mac OS. Copy the version that corresponds to your operating
system into the folder named "FileMaker Extensions" inside your
FileMaker Pro application folder. This folder is usually on your
hard drive in a folder similar to this:

<Your HD>:Applications:FileMaker Pro:FileMaker Extensions:

If you had POP3it installed previously, you may find a file in
your FileMaker Extensions folder named "POP3it". You will need
to delete this before starting FileMaker Pro so that you do not
have two versions of the plug-in installed.

After installation, you can start up FileMaker Pro, and the
plug-in should automatically be active. You can then open the
"Quick_Start_Example.fp5" database and/or the
"POP3it_Example.fp5" directory database to begin exploring
POP3it.

Quick Start:

To begin exploring POP3it, open the Quick_Start_Example database,
which has instructions on how to proceed. Please read through the
POP3it_Guide documentation PDF as it covers the email scripts step
by step.

Once you have mastered the Quick_Start_Example database, take a
look at the POP3it_Example database and its related section of the
documentation. Also note that we have included a POP3it_Functions
database which is a function reference database that is searchable
and has examples of how to use each function.

All of the example database are free and are not password protected.
Feel free to examine them, change them around to test out other POP3it
features, and just try things out. You can use the example databases
simply as examples on how to incorporate POP3it into your own databases,
or as starting points for new databases that fit your specific needs.
Please keep in mind that the example databases are just that, examples.
They are by no means the only way to integrate POP3it with FileMaker
Pro.

Features:

- Dynamically check multiple POP3 email accounts, even on different
    servers.
- Automatically extract major email fields such as To, From,
    Subject, etc.
- Receive Attachments, which are placed in a directory that you can
    specify dynamically.
- Download entire messages into one field or split up into their
    respective fields.
- Download specific body types like Text only or HTML only.
- Export HTML emails, complete with inline graphics, so that you
can view them in a web browser.

For a complete description of how to use POP3it please refer to the
POP3it_Guide.pdf file. (If you do not have Adobe Acrobat, you can
download it from Adobe at

POP3it History:

-- 9-1-2007 POP3it 3.0.20 Released.
This is the final version of the plug-in to be released. The
plug-in is now retired and no longer supported.

<some history information missing ... it was never typed in here
for some reason>

-- 8-7-2002 POP3it 3.0.10 Released.
This version fixes several bugs in both Mac and Win. It also
has better support for OS X.

-- 10-04-2001 POP3it 3.0.6 Released.
This version fixes a bug in the APOP support on Mac. If
you logged into one server that didn't have APOP support and
then logged into a second server that required it, POP3it
still thought that the server didn't support it. This also
removes the idle "NOOP" command sent to mail servers from
Mac POP3it. It's causing problems for some servers. Finally,
this fixes a bug with the Register function that caused it
to fail if a previous version of POP3it had been registered
     on that machine.

-- 09-24-2001 POP3it 3.0.4 Released.
This fixes a few decoding bugs associated with the Headers
     of emails.

-- 09-21-2001 POP3it 3.0.3 Released.
This version attempts to fix the Japanese Attachment
filename bug. It also fixes a bug where POP3it would
completely hang Mac OS 9.2.1. This version also speeds
up the downloading of emails on Windows when the Status
     Dialog is visible.

-- 09-04-2001 POP3it 3.0.2 Released.
This version fixes a few problems on the Mac side in
relation to disconnecting from the mail server and when
getting the size of emails from the mail server. The
documentation has also been updated to allow clickable
contents and plug-in function names throughout the text.

-- 08-29-2001 POP3it 3.0.1 Released.
This version fixes several bugs related to decoding of
Japanese emails. This version does not yet fix the problem
with attachment filenames that contain Japanese characters.

-- 08-13-2001 POP3it 3.0.0 Released.
This version brings many enhancements and new features to
POP3it, including Japanese and Central and European
character support, a new Status Window, OS X support, and
     many other things.

-- 10-23-2000 POP3it 2.0.6 Final Released.
POP3it 2.0 is officially released out of beta.

-- 10-22-2000 POP3it 2.0.6b1 Released.
     New Features: (Mac and Win)
       - Added the AutoDelete function and changed the AutoDelete
option in the Configuration Dialog to match. Requested
by Chris O'Brien and Patrick G. Ruhsert.

-- 10-20-2000 POP3it 2.0.5b1 Released.
     Bug Fixes: (Mac and Win)
       - POP3it was crashing on certain emails where the Header
part of the email ended with the "To" addresses. Thanks
         to Nicolas Weber.

-- 10-19-2000 POP3it 2.0.4b1 Released.
     Bug Fixes: (Win only)
       - Checking multiple accounts in rapid succession caused Win
POP3it to lose it's place and start giving random errors.
This bug has been fixed, however, you may still have to
insert a 1 or 2 second pause between multiple accounts for
POP3it to have enough time to disconnect and ready itself
for the next account. Thanks to Chris O'Brien.

-- 10-17-2000 POP3it 2.0.3b1 Released.
     Bug Fixes: (Mac only)
       - Fixed CurrUIDL and CurrSize on Macintosh (they weren't
returning anything). Thanks to Patrick Ruhsert.
     Bug Fixes: (Mac and Win)
       - POP3it was set to return the first 64k (65536 bytes) of
huge email bodies to FileMaker, however, FileMaker's actual
limit is 64000 bytes. Corrected POP3it for both platforms.
Thanks to Michel van der Voort.

-- 10-12-2000 POP3it 2.0.2b1 Released.
     Bug Fixes: (Mac and Win)
       - AppleDouble attachments were not always being decoded,
depending on what email client sent the attachment. Thanks
         to Al Hielscher.

-- 10-12-2000 POP3it 2.0.1b1 Released.
     Bug Fixes: (Mac only)
       - The Body Type pull down on the Configuration Dialog was
not saving the correct value. Anything selected below
"HTML" was defaulting back to "HTML". Thanks to Tim.

-- 10-9-2000 POP3it 2.0b1 released for both Mac and Win
This version brings both the Mac and Win versions to the same
ground. The Mac version now has a functioning Configuration
      Dialog.

    Bug Fixes:
      - Numerous bug fixes for both platforms, mostly involving
        attachments.
      - Mac version is now more stable.

    Features Added:
      - POP3it now knows the difference between Text and HTML
bodies and can give you the specific body type you are
        looking for.
      - You can now export HTML emails, complete with inline
graphics, to your hard drive so that you can view them
        in a web browser.

-- 6-13-2000 POP3it 1.5b1 released.
This is a complete rewrite of the plug-in from the ground up
making it more stable, faster, and easier to use.

    Bug Fixes:
      - Fixed the bug that crashed FMP when the email had no
body or only had one line without a CRLF.
      - Attachments are no longer decoded when you call the
CurrBody function. They only are decoded when you call
        CurrAttach or CurrAll.

    Features Added:
      - POP3it now understands more types of attachment encoding.
It can handle Base64, UUencoding, Quoted-Printable (both
in the body and in the headers), and BinHex (sort of; it
        copies the data to a file with the extension .hqx;
Stuffit-Expander can read and decode these files).
      - POP3it now gives more meaningful errors. For example, when
you call OpenConnection with a bad Username, it will tell
you the Username was bad instead of just saying "Could
        not connect."

-- 9-6-1999 POP3it 1.0 released.

Known Issues:

-- POP3it cannot currently handle attachments that have Japanese
characters in the filename.

-- Windows: When the Configuration Dialog is open, and you open up
the "Register" Dialog, and then switch applications, when you switch
back to FileMaker, the extra dialog is not always on top. Work
Around: Click on the Dialog Window on your Task Bar (next to the
"Start" button).

-- Macintosh: You must close the POP3it Status Window before
closing FileMaker Pro. If you do not, FileMaker Pro will give
you an error stating that it cannot write to the disk. The
easiest way to ensure that the POP3it Status Window is closed
is to put a call to POP3-HideStatus in a Close script that
you define in Edit->Preferences->Document for your main
database.
